The
POF cable cutting tool (see photo left) generates smooth POF endfaces
especially in combination with POF cables comprising a PVC and PE
transparent jackaet. The fork like structure around the thin cutting
blade avoids the blade bending during the cutting process. The POF
endface is smooth over at least 2/3 of the endface area. This endface
quality is sufficient for simplex 650nm systems. (POF cable with a
medium hard jacket material like PE black do not benefit from the
special design of this cutting tool. They can be prepared in equal
quality with other commercially available cutting tools. The achieved
endface quality is in general not sufficient for the application in
simplex transmission systems.)
The cutting tool can prepare at each cutting point about 20 cuts
without loss of quality. To avoid the risk of injury at the very sharp
blade the cutting area is recessed by 0.1mm from the tool edge.

To user that intend to
cut more than a small number of endfaces we offer the cutting tool in a
special version that allows to change the blade. In the first step the
blade can be turned, if the cutting points at one blade side are used
up, subsequently a new blade can be inserted. |

In simplex 470nm
systems the POF endface quality is more critical, especially for
systems that shall realize the maximum transmission distance. If the
endface quality as achieved with the above cutting tool is no longer
sufficient, or, if under professional conditions a large number of
endface preparation shall be done, we recommend a POF polishing machine
with diamond cutter. Though this tool is an investment, it is
worthwhile for everybody, who has to do more than some endface
preparations. The POF endface as prepared with the polishing machine
will result with best quality, if the jacket material is made of PVC or
PE transparent. |

A POF cable that is
unintentionally destroyed during installation may be mended with a POF
splice. It's not necessary to exchange the complete cable. POF splices
allow to connect two cable endfaces with an inseparable, quality
optical connection. To realize a POF splice a UV curable
transparent optical glue and a UV light source are required in addition
to the splice material.

their inconspicousness the following POF cables are especially suitable
for installation inside living rooms:
- 2,2mm PE white jacket,
- 2,2mm PVC white jacket,
- 2,2mm PE transparent jacket.
