650nm simplex comprising EELD (edge emitting laser diode)
|
With the arrival of high
quality and long term stable 650nm edge emitting laser diodes (EELD)
with an average life time of about 10 years, POF technology now has
very fast and nearly arbitrary bright light sources available. The
brightness is limited by eye safety only.
Though EELD laser diodes are suitable for significantly
higher data rates, DieMount started the development of systems with
EELD with a simplex Fast Ethernet 100Mbps transmission system. The high
optical transmit power of about +1dBm is the main advantage of EELD
use. The receiver sensitivity of -20dBm completes a simplex Fast
Etehrnet system that is distance limited by POF dispersion and not
by POF attenuation.
The cable endfaces in this system must be prepared with great care by
wet polishing in order to avoid optical crosstalk at the coupling point.
At present we test the practical serviceability of the POF transmission system with EELD.
